Biosecurity remains top of mind for Iowa Pork Producers

The president of the Iowa Pork Producers identifies biosecurity as a top priority based on discussions during the Association’s annual meeting earlier this week.

Dennis Liljedahl of Essex says 2021 will be another year of foreign animal disease preparedness being top-of-mind.

“That’s been a priority for two or three years, and I think the disruptions we saw with COVID emphasize that we need to be as prepared as we can.”

Iowa Pork held its annual meeting Tuesday and Liljedahl tells Brownfield African swine fever remains a serious concern, but so does Foot and Mouth Disease.

“When I came on the board (around) five years ago it was a priority to get a more robust (FMD) vaccine bank, and we have managed to get some of that money through the Federal Legislature.”

He says biosecurity for both FMD and ASF really begins with border inspectors and making sure there’s enough money to keep them on the job.
