NASDA members approve policy in support of ag workers, food insecurity, and more

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture voted on policy during its Winter Policy Conference.

President Ryan Quarles says action items and policy amendments included increasing capacity of meat processors.

“We know USDA will likely be taking some suggestions about how to move forward to support meat processors and I think there is some financial support as well, so in that example we would like for suggestions from our members to be forwarded to USDA for their consideration,” he says.

NASDA members voted on the importance of advancing scienced-based decision making required by the US Mexico Canada Agreement.

“Particularly when it comes to sanitary and phytosanitary issues with some recent decisions coming out of Mexico,” he says.

CEO Barb Glenn says members also supported efforts to secure resources for ag workforce safety.

“We passed an action item on our support for needed resources for the many tools needed—not just PPE—but also for the prioritization of our workers for vaccination programs,” she says.

Other policy items include emergency response to animal disease through the one health framework, addressing food insecurity by reducing food waste and advocating for changes to farmers to families food box program, land preservation and farmland protection, and more.
