New law allows virtual member meetings for Wisconsin’s cooperatives

Cooperatives in Wisconsin can now hold annual member meetings and special member meetings remotely.  Governor Tony Evers signed Act 5, the new law that allows the use of technology for member meetings Thursday.

The law also allows a cooperative’s board of directors to adopt by laws that are effective only in an emergency and provides emergency powers to a cooperative in anticipation of or during an emergency.

Cooperatives lobbied for the changes after having meetings restricted to in-person by statute, even though the coronavirus pandemic limited most in-person functions.
