Stronger La Nina could mean wet planting season in Midwest

Brownfield’s meteorologist says La Nina conditions are expected to wind down in the coming weeks which will mean active spring weather.

“Across many areas of the Plains and Corn Belt locales, we anticipate some nominal, brief improvement in the drought pattern in the Plains.”

Greg Soulje is forecasting rain to hang over some parts of the Midwest in the coming months.

“Parts of eastern Minnesota, much of Wisconsin, about all into southern and southwestern Illinois, and points onto the east look to be a very active and moisture laden early spring and summer season,” he says.

Soulje says the currently La Nina appears to be stronger and longer lasting than in previous years, bringing moisture to the Midwest and eastern regions while leaving the Plains and Southwest dry.

“It may be a year of recurring planting, reoccurring flooding, and basically too much of a good thing,” he says.

He says increased severe weather is also possible where it is wet and could likely expand into the Mississippi Valley, Mid-South, and Delta regions.
