Precision livestock research stretches across states and disciplines

Michigan State University researchers will work collaboratively with the Universities of Wisconsin and Nebraska to improve precision livestock technology.

The group has been awarded a $1 million grant from USDA to improve computer vision systems in livestock while studying the management of pigs and cattle.

The researchers say by combining the specialties of engineers along with animal and computer scientists, algorithms can be used to detect illness sooner and enhance animal welfare.

MSU’s Swine Teaching and Research Facility, UW’s on-campus dairy research farm, and USDA’s Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska will be outfitted with the computer vision systems as part of the project.
