U.S. spring wheat production up sharply

U.S. spring wheat production was up sharply last year thanks to big improvements in weather and yield in most key growing areas.

The USDA says the crop totaled 482.19 million bushels, an increase 151.34 million bushels, with an average yield of 46.2 bushels per acre, 13.6 above 2021.

Farmers planted fewer acres to spring wheat in 2022, but harvested area was up, implying a lower rate of abandonment.

The USDA’s 2023 prospective planting numbers are out at the end of March.
