Rain give Iowa crop condition ratings a boost

Some parts of Iowa received above-normal precipitation last week.

USDA’s latest crop update says in the central and southeast, rainfall slowed fieldwork but did help recharge soil moisture.

Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig says with forecasts indicating warmer and dryer conditions for Iowa State Fairgoers, that should be favorable for farmers looking to bale hay, chop silage, and prepare to seed cover crops.

Corn condition ratings fell one percentage point to 58 percent good to excellent, with 23 percent dented.  That’s five days ahead of last year and three days ahead of the five-year average.
