The USDA hearing on the Federal Milk Marketing Order system began last week, and Jim Mulhern with the National Milk Producers Federation tells Brownfield it will take time to get through the many proposals and witnesses. “Right now, you know, people are getting familiar with the process here. It is what I’d call a quasi-judicial proceeding.”
Mulhern says this first hearing since 2000 got off to a slow start with the entry of proposals and data, and the extensive cross-examination of witnesses by attorneys of opposing groups does make observers think they’re watching a trial.
