Waterlogged fields causing rot issues

Early sugarbeet harvest is underway and Michigan farmers are concerned about soil conditions and sugar content.

Adam Bauer grows about 8,000 acres of sugarbeets, corn, dry beans, pickling cucumbers, and soybeans in Reese with his family.

“We’re hopeful to get back to that 19 percent like we were in last year and cooler nights help with that,” he says.  “Hopefully we get the rain to shut off for a little while, if we don’t, it could be a very challenging fall, not just for sugarbeets, but for every crop.”

He estimates the last six weeks have brought upwards of 17 inches of rain to his region.
