Wisconsin legislation proposed by State Representative Loren Oldenburg from Viroqua would create an online, interactive carbon calculator for Wisconsin farmers.
Jason Mugnaini with the Wisconsin Farm Bureau says Oldenburg’s bill is a unique proposal. “You see these kinds of carbon credit markets and these alternative markets develop a little bit chaotically. It’s an opportunity for people to have someplace to go to kind of dip their toes in the water, see if there’s something they’re doing to qualify, and see if there’s an opportunity for an additional revenue stream.”
Assembly Bill 419 would require the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection to develop and maintain an online, interactive carbon calculator so farmers can determine their farm’s direct and indirect carbon emissions, and it would protect the privacy of the farmer’s data.
