A livestock economist says cattle producers remain slow to rebuild herds.
University of Missouri’s Scott Brown says this week’s livestock slaughter report will provide some insight into whether producer sentiment has changed. “What beef cow slaughter looks like as we start 2024,” he says. “Seeing if there’s any indication there that we might be starting to do any kind of hard rebuilding.”
Brown expects beef cow slaughter to continue to run below year-ago levels, but that is largely because of how many beef cows were slaughtered in 2022 and it doesn’t mean herd rebuilding is underway.
He tells Brownfield there isn’t a magic number to indicate expansion.
