A stronger start to spring fertilizer might challenge supplies – Voice Of Muscatine

A stronger start to spring fertilizer might challenge supplies

A fertilizer market expert says U.S. supplies could get tight if spring fieldwork continues at a strong pace across the Midwest.

Josh Linville says the system usually plans for spring applications to pick up around mid-March and last fall was one of the strongest application seasons in recent history.

“Our fall run on anhydrous, we think, was the third largest run since 2000 and we emptied the system,” says Linville. “But because it was so good and spread out, that means we ended the fall season very low on inventories sitting in tanks and there was only so much logistical capacity to move product and get the system rebuilt.”

He tells Brownfield the system was going to struggle to refill supplies in a normal spring and if supplies get tighter, fertilizer prices will increase.
