INDIANAPOLIS – Despite a third quarter 11-0 run to start the second half, the Indiana Fever fell to the Los Angeles Sparks 88-82 on Tuesday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. After the Fever’s third quarter run the Spark went on a 28-8 run of its own late in the second half to earn its first road win of the regular season.
Fever rookie guard Caitlin Clark ended the night with a career-high 30 points which was two points shy of tying Tamika Catchings for the most points scored by a Fever rookie in a regular season game. Additionally, Clark shot 13-of-15 from the free throw line and tallied six assists, five rebounds, three blocks and three steals. According to Across The Timeline, Clark is the first rookie in WNBA history to record at least 30 points, five assists, five rebounds, three steals and three blocks in a regular season game.
Fever center Aliyah Boston tied a season-high 17 points scored, all in the second half, and went 2-of-2 from beyond the arc, 5-of-6 from the free throw line on top of pulling down six rebounds. Indiana outscored Los Angeles in paint points (26-22), second chance points (17-12) while also notching a season-high 12 steals. The Fever made more free throws (20) and attempted more free throws (25) than in any other game this season.
In the win, Los Angeles shot 14-of-23 from 3-point range, including a 10-of-13 clip from beyond the arc in the second half. Sparks guard Kia Nurse led Los Angeles with 22 points and guard Aari McDonald followed off the bench with 21 points, four assists, and two rebounds. Sparks forward Dearica Hamby recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Sparks rookie forward Cameron Brink was limited to only three points, three rebounds and two blocks in the win.
