George was born on August 26, 1947, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Roger Victor and Lorna Knipfer Kretschmar.

George graduated from Muscatine High School and Northern Iowa University.

George was a school librarian for 24 years in Iowa in four school districts: Stanwood-Mechanicsville, Red Oak, Missouri Valley, and Bennett. George then served 15 years as school librarian for the Ashton and Ashton-Franklin Center School Districts, retiring in 2012.

George was a Christian. His faith was very important to him. He loved helping students and the library was a safe haven used by many students. He loved working outdoors gardening, planting trees, tending his grapes, and taking care of his flowers. His yard was his treasure, pride, and joy. George enjoyed running in the Quad Cities BIX until his knees told him walking his dogs, Adam and Percy, should be his focus.

George is predeceased by his parents – father, Roger Victor Kretschmar, July 31, 2004, and mother, Lorna G. Kretschmar, April 7, 2006; aunt, Margaret Kretschmar, April 23, 2005; and brother, Jerry Kretschmar, April 5, 2005.

He will be deeply missed by his former students and coworkers.
