Mary Jane (Starkweather) Mathias – Voice Of Muscatine

Mary Jane (Starkweather) Mathias passed away on December 14, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on May 18, 1943, to Adam and Gertrude (Manley) Starkweather, Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She married the love of her life, James Orren Mathias, on July 4, 1960, and together they shared many years of companionship and adventure.

Mary was deeply involved in the lives of her family and community. She supported her husband in scouting and spent countless hours planning and shopping for campouts and events. She cherished the weekends spent camping with her husband and son and attending rendezvous gatherings, where she made lifelong friendships. Her passion for family time, card games, and laughter created countless cherished memories for all who knew her.

An avid reader, Mary could easily finish a romance novel in a day, always accompanied by her favorite treat—chocolate-covered peanuts, chips and a Pepsi. She brought joy to those around her with her playful teasing, a memory that many of her grandchildren fondly recall—especially her “lizard kisses.”

Mary’s professional life was just as remarkable. She worked for Keller Ladder, where she broke barriers as a plant manager during a time when leadership roles like hers were predominantly held by men. She was resilient and strong, helping several family members and friends find employment during her time there. When the factory closed, she transitioned into full-time childcare, a role that allowed her to nurture and care for many children over the years, including several of her own grandchildren. Mary found purpose and joy in being needed and cherished the company of others throughout her life.

Mary was also a proud member of the Red Hat Ladies, enjoying weekly lunches, trips to the casino, and other outings with her dear friends. She had a wonderful way of connecting with those around her and always brought warmth to every conversation and gathering.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to her sister, Kathy Frisbe, for her tireless care and devotion during her final days. Our family takes comfort in knowing she was so loved.

A special thank you to the staff at Fresenius Dialysis Center for their compassion and care given to our mother. You added 7 additional years to her life for her to enjoy her family and friends. As well as the staff at the Lutheran Homes for their compassion and support.

Celebration of life will be January 11th 2pm at the Fruitland Community Center in Fruitland, IA. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences: www.wittichfuneralhome.com.

Mary leaves behind a loving family, including her children, Terry (Dave) Wargo, Tina (Brian) Hammer, James Jr. (Carrie) Mathias, Tracy (Scott) Cole, and Shane (Nichole) Mathias; her grandchildren, Jamie, Kalvin, Nicholas, Rachel, Kyle, Kodi, Nathan, Nicole, Alyx, Samuel, Logan, Edik, Maya, Shane Jr., and Anthony; and her 18 great-grandchildren, as well as her sisters Kathy Frisbe, Linda Brockert, and Joyce (Robert) Mathias. Several nieces and nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband James Mathias, her daughter Trina Goodwin, her parents Gertrude Manley Starkweather and Adam Starkweather Sr., and her siblings Jean Ramer, Adam Starkweather, Loretta Adcock, and Doug Starkweather, niece Lavonna Titus and Paul Titus.
