General CRP sign-up deadline is approaching

Farmers have about one week to sign up for the general Conservation Reserve Program.

USDA Farm Service Agency Administrator Richard Fordyce says the February 28th deadline was set so farmers can make decisions ahead of the planting season.

“So farmers and ranchers can use best management practices on that ground in preparation for CRP,” he says.

Fordyce says a separate CRP grasslands sign-up will follow general sign-up from March to May.

CRP continuous sign-up is ongoing.

“The ongoing continuous sign-up continues to target high priority conservation practices and now focuses primarily on water quality practices prioritized in the 2018 Farm Bill under the Clean Lakes Estuaries and Rivers Initiative or CLEAR,” he says.

This is the 35th anniversary of CRP.
