Record red meat production in January
Red meat production hit record levels during January. The USDA says commercial red meat production to start the year was 4.959 billion pounds, an increase of 5% from January 2019.
Beef production was an all-time high for the month at 2.388 billion pounds, up 3% on the year, with a 2% rise in the slaughter total to 2.899 million head and 12-pound gain in the average live weight at 1,375 pounds.
Pork was also a monthly record at 2.553 billion pounds, a year to year jump of 8%, with slaughter 7% higher at 11.815 billion pounds and the average live weight two pounds heavier at 290 pounds.
The USDA’s official 2019 red meat production totals are out in April.
