Senators urge more protection for food industry workers

Three-dozen U.S. Senators led by Senate Ag Committee ranking member Debbie Stabenow of Michigan are urging the Trump administration to increase protective measures at meat and food plants where an increasing number of workers have tested positive for COVID-19.

In their letter, the senators, all Democrats, say the shortage of testing and personal protective equipment at the plants and for farm workers in general is making the problem worse.

They say breakdowns in the food supply chain could have “significant economic impacts for both consumers and (ag) producers.” The lawmakers want the administration to coordinate with state and local governments and the private sector to protect essential workers in the food supply chain and to protect the food supply itself.
