Reports: Trump to order U.S. meat processing plants to stay open
Several media outlets are reporting that President Trump is going to invoke the Defense Production Act and order the nation’s meat processing plants to remain open.
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office earlier today that he planned to sign an executive order to address “liability problems” related to the food supply chain and specifically mentioned Tyson Foods. The order will reportedly apply to all meat processing plants, however.
The administration has come under increasing pressure to address the packing plants issue. Tyson ran full-page ads over the weekend warning of possible meat shortages as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, which has forced many packing processing plants to close and others to reduce production.
Leading Iowa officials, including Governor Kim Reynolds and U.S. Senators Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley, sent a letter to the administration this week, urging it to “utilize every authority available to keep plants open, and to re-open closed facilities as soon as it is possible to do so safely.”
