Vetter: USMCA improved trade, solidified relationships
Former U.S. Chief Ag Negotiator Darci Vetter says there have been several improvements in international trade policy since the US Mexico Canada Agreement went into effect on July 1.
“(The USMCA) includes improved language on environment and labor, sanitary and phytosanitary provisions that will allow for better coordination and commitment to science, and new digital provisions to ensure that data can flow between markets,” she says.
Vetter says state and provincial leaders from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are critical translators who ensure agreements like the USMCA address regional issues, while allowing progress in national policy.
“Much of our agricultural success has been because of the benefits that our regional approaches have often to and flew from that success from the outside in, where the coordination and the strength of our trading relationship has allowed us to be more effective advocates in larger global alliances,” she says.
Vetter made these comments during the virtual Tri-National Agricultural Accord on Tuesday. She says the Accord is a unique and important venue that strengthens the ag alliance among Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.
