Dairy product production up for September

The USDA says September dairy product numbers were mostly up on the year with skim milk powder seeing the greatest gains while dry whey posted the largest slowdown.

Total cheese production totaled nearly 1.1 billion pounds, up one percent on the year and fractionally from the previous month. Italian cheese production was up on the month but down on the year while American cheese was higher on the year and down from August.

Butter production totaled 152 million pounds, up more than five percent from last year and fractionally from the previous month.

Nonfat dry milk was up 5.5 percent from 2019 and skim milk powder was up more than 23 percent.  Dry whey production was down more than 17 percent.  Lactose was up nearly two percent from last year.
